This kit is designed to teach students how electricity is produced and transmitted. The kit is divided into five sections:

Introduction
The introduction includes this section, a matrix outlining curricula fits and a teacher evaluation.

Teacher Guide and Answer Keys
The teacher guide and answer keys provide information on how to complete the activities. For each activity the objectives, time and materials needed, advance preparation, procedure and extension activities are provided. The answer keys are duplicates of student worksheets with the answers included.

The kit can be followed from Activity 1 to 8 or you can use just a few activities. The purpose and time needed for each activity is listed below to help determine the activities you would like to do. The entire unit requires 10 – 12 class periods.

Activity 1: Charged Up Over Electricity
Time: Part A – 30 minutes, Part B – 45 minutes
Students learn that electric charges are commonly found in our surroundings. They learn that electrically charged particles are attracted to neutral or grounded objects and that like charges repel each other.

Activity 2: Light Bright
Time: Part A – 60 minutes, Part B – 45 minutes
Students describe an electric circuit and build their own circuit.

Activity 3: Current Detector
Time: 45 minutes
Students build a device that records small electric currents.

Activity 4: Generation Gap
Time: 45 minutes
Students build a small electric generator and describe its basic structure.

Activity 5: Electron Express
Time: 60 minutes
Students learn about the transmission of electricity from generating stations to their homes and about residential electric wiring.

Activity 6: Different Sources Make the Same Forces
Time: 45 minutes
Students learn why provinces generate electricity from different energy sources.

Background Information
Background information for the teacher includes information on electricity and various topics related to the kit. The materials list for each activity indicates the section of the background information that will be useful for the activity. If you are uncertain about some topics in the activity, go immediately to the background information. The terms highlighted in bold in the background information are defined in the glossary.

Glossary
