This kit is designed to teach students to respect electricity when they are working or playing around power lines or using electric devices.

The kit is divided into five sections:

Introduction
The introduction includes this section, a matrix outlining curricula fits, a teacher evaluation, and information on other Northland Utilities teaching kits.

Teacher Guide and Answer Keys
The teacher guide and answer keys provide information on how to complete the activities. For each activity the objectives, time and materials needed, advance preparation, procedure and extension activities are provided. The answer keys are duplicates of all the student worksheets with the answers included.

The kit can be followed from Activity 1 to 5 or you can use just a few activities. The purpose and time needed for each activity is listed below to help determine the activities you would like to do. The entire unit requires six to eight class periods.

Activity 1: Electrons In Motion
Time: Part A – 20 minutes, Part B – 45 minutes
Students understand path to ground experiment with insulators and conductors.

Activity 2: Outdoor Alert
Time: 30 minutes
Students recognize potential electric hazards in their play areas.

Activity 3: Follow the Electron Flow
Time: 45 minutes
Students use the principles of electricity to better understand potential electric
hazards in the home.

Activity 4: Home Safety Audit
Time: 30 minutes, Home Portion – 2 to 3 days
Students identify actual electric hazards in their homes and determine solutions to reduce the hazards. Students prepare to respond to electric emergencies.

Activity 5: Be Power Safe
Time: Part A – Intermittent (one day), Part B – 45 minutes
Students identify electric hazards and respond to electric emergencies.

Background Information
Background information for the teacher includes information on electricity and various topics related to the kit. The materials list for each activity indicates the section of the background information that will be useful for the activity. If you are uncertain about some topics in the activity, go immediately to the background information. The terms highlighted in bold in the background are defined in the glossary.

Glossary
A glossary provides definitions of some words used in the kits. These are written for students as well as teachers.

Copy Masters
The copy master section provides the master copies of all student worksheets and any other masters required for the activities.
