What is EMF?

Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) are a basic force of nature, generated by electricity. EMF is found in the earth as well as everything that is electrical, from your toaster to high-voltage power lines. Electric fields are present in electrical appliances whenever they are plugged in. Magnetic fields exist only when current is flowing. Power lines are measured for both electric and magnetic fields.

Exposure to EMF varies

Electric and magnetic fields can be strong or weak and have a high or low frequency. For example, microwave and X-ray fields are high frequency fields and have high energy levels. Power lines have low frequency and low energy levels. The strength of both electric and magnetic fields decreases significantly as you move away from their source. Electric fields can be shielded or weakened by trees and buildings but magnetic fields are not so easily blocked.

Scientists studying possible health effects

The biggest question scientists want to answer is whether there are potential long-term health effects on people as a result of exposure to EMF. So far, no direct cause-and-effect relationships have been found. A few studies suggest there might be links between childhood leukemia and high-voltage power lines but most studies have concluded there is no link.

What is Northland Utilities doing?

It may take several more years before enough scientific data is available to establish whether or not there is a link between EMF and adverse health effects. Northland Utilities' parent company, ATCO Electric, is taking a number of steps to minimize the effects of EMF on its customers and keep them informed. For example:

ATCO Electric contributes funds to major independent EMF studies in Canada and other countries.

We monitor all industry, university and government-sponsored research through the Canadian Electricity Association and related information services.

We continue to design, construct and operate our facilities so that all accepted engineering and safety standards are met. In populated areas, we try to avoid or minimize construction of power lines near sensitive sites such as schools, hospitals and residences.

We will continue to measure electric and magnetic fields and share the information with interested individuals and organizations. Upon request, we will conduct EMF measurements in a customer's home.
